Detinating 429 Tons of Explosives
This is what happens when you detonate 429 tons of military grade high explosives all at once. The initial explosion at the very beginning is only 30 tons.
To give you a size perspective this video was shot from 2-3 miles away out side of the frag radius (sort of).
If you watch closely you can see the blast wave travel toward the camera.

Outstanding documentary on Tarawa. Tarawa was a nightmare. The entire 2nd Marine Division was required taking an island of 1 square mile in area. The island was defended by 3,000 Imperial Marines. The beachhead was contested from the start. Upwards of 1,000 U.S. Marines were killed in action.
